Attention America: Here come the Thunderbirds!
Recently I got invited by my daughter to travel to her & her fellowship in Las Vegas & watch her husband at work. Well..Las Vegas, who could state no to that invite. Under ordinary circumstances that would have been enough. But not this visit!!
You watch my son-in-law Steve goes by different name- Dallas. Steve is Major Steve Horton the #4 slot pilot for the United States Air Force Flight Demonstration Team-The Thunderbirds.
The occasion was the Approval show-the really premier exhibit of the time of year but open to only mates & fellowship of the whole team & various high ranking Generals with pen & paper taking notes on each move. Approximately 1000 got the commemorate of watching the new 2006 team do their things over their home at Nellis AFB below cloud skies. The herd is so little by comparison to a normal exhibit of 200,000 attendees that it feels like a secluded consultation with the Pope. The largest ever so herd was at Coney Island on 4 July1987 -a mere 2.25 million saw in awe that day.
And whenever that wasnt plenty the following nighttime it was the annual exhibit time of year kickoff dinner, which at least partially celebrates the finish of a grueling training schedule. This year the lunch was held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in pretty downtown Las Vegas.
That supplied me the chance to contact many of the new team appendages up close & individual including LTC Kevin Robbins Commander/Leader, aka the boss; MAJ Ed Casey, Opposing Solo; CPT Nichole Malachowski, Right Wing aka FiFi; & CPT Tad Clark, Narrator. FiFi is the premier feminine Thunderbird flight team member-a testimonial to her power as a pilot-was the matter of a Good Morning America tale that really morning.
As you could envision this really elite grouping of 6 flyers, 6 else officers & a support team of 135 outstanding youthful men & women are, plainly put, the really best in the world. All that talent, energy, dedication, teamwork, pride in what they do & how they do it-I am humbled to be in their presence but so proud to be an American.
In a nutshell the Thunderbird mission is principally to support recruiting & retention platforms & as you could envision common relations. The team likely spends as practically time at contact & greets as they do flying. They are a PR machine-and not a bad machine at that.
The Thunderbirds have a really enquiring schedule that runs for from March to November each year with generally 65-75 exhibits in upwards of thirty states. Check out www.nellis.af.mil for more data & a exhibit near you. It is an undergo you wont blank out & wellit is AWESOME!
