Not so American Samoa

American Samoa is an unincorporated and unorganized territory of the United States. It is located in the South Pacific Ocean, just to the East of the larger country of Samoa. International rivalries in the later half of the 19 th century were settled by an a treaty in 1899, in which the country of Germany and the United States of America divided the Samoan land area. The United States formally occupied its portion and kept a strong presense.

The western islands of Samoa which once belonged to the United States are now the independent state of Samoa. A cooling station was built by the U.S. Navy, in Pago Pago Bay for its Pacific Squadron. During the second World War, US Marines based in American Samoa, out numbered the local population. This has historically had a huge cultural influence on the country, which is still evident in many parts of the country today.

Some quick Facts:

  • American Samoa is located in the region of Steps Point, which is the southern most point in the United States of America
  • Goods manufactured in American Samoa or it’s region can be labeled “Made in the USA.”
  • Approximately 30 Samoans, most from American Samoa, play in the National Football League (NFL).
  • The National soccer team of American Samoa holds a world record in international soccer for the record defeat in an international match, a 31 to 0 crushing by Australia on April 11, 2001.

A growing number of families, girlfriends and guys are finding a beach vacation to be a terrific way to unwind from everyday stress. Some, it could be said, even take that idea to the extreme.

On Florida’s Emerald Coast-located on the upper Gulf Coast-visitors can go “Emerald Extreme.” From kite-boarding at Choctawhatchee Bay-Florida’s number one kite-boarding location-and parasailing 500 feet over the Destin Harbor to fishing 20 miles offshore to catch the perfect king mackerel, the area offers thrill seekers an extreme array of activities before they rest their weary heads and adrenaline-rushed bodies in affordable, Gulf-edged accommodations.

Unleashing a suppressed wild side, gal pals strap in and step up to a 65-foot-high platform to take the plunge at The Track’s bungee jump. Families can climb aboard 64-foot fishing boats destined for the deep blue seas, couples can soar to new highs parasailing, while the more adventurous-usually the guys-can catch an extreme ride on a kite-board. Resting after an intense “Emerald Extreme” day, people then enjoy sipping daiquiris while taking in the spectacular view of Destin Harbor.

Slip Into Greece

If you’re looking to travel, may I recommend Greece? Scanning through some picture on the internet today, I was amazed at just how much there is to see. The ruins, the culture, the landscape…. everything! It is a beautiful country, which fits well in beautiful Europe.

There is something like 15,000 kilometers of coastline to view in Greece, which also includes numerous islands such as Rhodes, Crete, and Kos. Although the edge is at sea level, approximately 80% of the land is made up of hills and mountains. Maybe this isn’t a perfect destination for a walk, but what do the hills and mountains contain?!

Sights to see! Things to experience! If you are into the picture taking and the sight seeing, Greece is the place for you. The ruins of Ancient Greece are incredible. The architecture, and the sheer amount of work involved in building these buildings isn’t the only incredible part. The amazing thing is that they are still standing this many years later!

And the culture of Ancient Greece, which is a period of about one thousand years, is really something to sink your energy into learning about. Their schooling, their housing, their cooking and food, and their arts are all very interesting to take a look at or to read about. Most historians believe Ancient Greece to be the foundation of western civilization. It heavily influenced our government, education, architecture, and language!

Greece has a little something in store for all of it’s visitors, everything from history to the beach! Now for planning next years summer vacation…
