Introducing Your Kids To The Joys Of Camping
Sep 26th
Taking your kids camping the first time can be a daunting task, if you’re not well prepared. But a well prepared camping trip with your kids can be a great joy for everyone involved. Here are a few considerations and preparations you should make before leaving home.
First of all, choose an easily accessible location. You may want to choose a camping spot that is accessible by vehicle if your kids are relatively young. If you want to hike in to the camping spot, keep the distance pretty short. Also, remember that younger kids may not be able to carry all of their gear and food in, so you’ll end up with one very heavy pack if you’re not careful.
Here are a few tips for minimizing the amount of stuff you have to take in, if you’re hiking to your camping spot.
First, choose a spot with easy access to water. That way you can take in dehydrated foods, and use the water at the camping spot to cook your food with. That will save you a lot of weight.
Also, try taking one or two larger tents to hold everyone, rather than several smaller tents.
A camp fire is another consideration. Campfires and s’mores are a must when you take your kids camping. Be sure you choose a location that allows campfires, and that has a readily available water supply to put the fire out.
When you take your kids camping, be sure that they have the same essentials that you take camping: extra clothing, a coat or rain jacket, food, water, a tent, a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, etc.
One last thing: before you go camping be sure you give your kids a few basic safety instructions, such as safety with fire, snakes, bears (if applicable), etc. Safety first!
Beach Camping Parks
Sep 25th
Beaches offer joy to every one irrespective of color, creed, or social status. Ever since man learned the art of expressing joy, ocean and beaches have been his theme, whether the medium is a poem, painting, photograph, song or video. The beauty of a sunrise or sun set at the beach is beyond description.
Beach camping is one of the least expensive ways of enjoying weekends or other holidays. One can experience long boardwalks and beach fun like volleyball, swimming, fishing, sailing, wind surfing, jet skiing, water skiing, boating and much more.
As in any activity, beach campers need to take essential camping equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, drinking water, food, cooler, camp stoves, utensils, can opener, appropriate clothes, charcoal chimney, cleaning items, first aid kit, binoculars, bug spray, camera, candles, cell phone, compass, flashlight, GPS, kites, pen and paper and water filters.
Beach camping requires additional equipment such as sunburn lotion, folding aluminum furniture, beach chairs and tables, shade tents, beach wear, beach bags, and beach umbrellas.
With kids there is always a probability for accidents, particularly on beaches. Though all beach camp sites have coast guard services available, it is important for the camper to carry a first aid kit. Whether it is a ready-made unit or put together for the occasion, the kit should include these items: personal medication, bandages, medical tape, sterile gauze, elastic wrap, antibiotics, antiseptic cream, burn ointment, hydrogen peroxide, scissors, tweezers, eye wash and sanitary napkins.
With proper planning and adequate equipment, beach camping can be a captivating human experience!
Weathervanes- Learn the basic functions of the historic weathervane!
Sep 24th
A traditional weathervane comes in two sections. The lower-half of a traditional weathervane is fixed and this is the section where the four points of the compass are aligned to their correct most accurate positions. The upper section of a traditional weathervane is the part of the vane that rotates and indicates the exact wind direction. The upper section can be any ornament as you wish, and the decorations often reflect the building the weathervane is atop. A weathervane ornament not only can display an animal or a gesture, but it can reveal a lot about you as an individual. A weathercock is also a weathervane, it just has a replication of a rooster as its decorations. The only rule with the upper section of a weathervane, is that the greatest amount of mass is to be on one side of the spindle, in other words, the weathervane has to have unequal weights on either side of the spindle. The inequality of the weathervanes weight, causes resistance for the oncoming wind, therefore forces the section with greater mass to the back and forces the pointer (the lighter end) to face the wind. For example, if the weathervane is pointing towards ‘N’, it means that the wind is indeed coming from the northern direction.
Most people wonder if it is possible to hand make a weathervane themselves. There are only two basic rules that must be followed when designing your own weather vane. Number one is that the ornament must have equal area on either side of the center. And the other rule is that the ornament must have unequal mass on either side of the center. So yes it is possible to create your own weathervane but all in all, it may be extremely hard work.

Going Camping? How To Find A Great Camping Spot
Sep 24th
If you want to go on a camping vacation, you will be faced with the decision on where to go. Many experienced campers have their favorite spots but if you want to try something new or are a novice camper, you will need to know how to choose a great camping spot. The first thing you will want to determine is whether or not you will be renting a recreational vehicle or sleeping outside in a tent. There are different grounds available for RV owners and those who are camping in tents. There are also features that you may want to be aware of when traveling with certain age groups. Some areas are more amenable to adults only while others are family friendly. The more populated areas are generally the ones that are best for smaller children and families.
Distance is another consideration. Most people do not want to drive long distances in order to camp. Airplane travel is also not conducive to camping since all the equipment that needs to accompany the travelers will not typically fit in the allotted luggage constraints. Therefore, flying is usually cost prohibitive. There are camping spots available throughout the United States often within a decent driving distance of most major cities. When looking for a camping spot, there are a few places you can go to use as a resource.
Travel agents will have ample information on campgrounds available and will be able to coordinate sightseeing, guided tours, and adventures. Camping stores will often have recommendations on popular local camping sites. The Internet is a valuable way to find information on camping. There are numerous sites online where you can get information on all camp grounds within a specific area. You can get editors and user reviews that will help you make a final decision on where to go.
